Overview
Nungwi is a traditional fishing and home approximately to 10,000 people. Nungwi has been a dhow (traditional fishing boat) boat yard for many years where local boat builders maintain their fishing dhows but also create new dhows which can take anywhere between 3-6 months to complete.
It is fascinating to watch boat builders using traditional skills which have been passed down over many generations. Until 1990 the population of Nungwi was still unfamiliar with tourism and was one of the last places on the Island to welcome tourists.
A guided walk tour of Nungwi starts from the Zanzibari Hotel and includes a visit to a small, local aquarium which houses sea turtles in a lagoon which is tidal. The tour takes around 3-4 hrs.
Swim with the turtles and learn about the centers’ programs to re-introduce green.turtles back to the sea. Visit the local dhow boat yard, fish market and learn how traditional houses are built from limestone before stopping by the local school to meet the school children (depending on time of visit). Despite tourism being so much a part of Zanzibar these days, Nungwi has managed to retain its traditional values and charm.
